Anurag Kashyap has spoken candidly about his relationship with Shubhra Shetty, revealing that marriage is not a priority for them and discussing the age difference that has sometimes made him self-conscious.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has opened up about his long-term relationship with Shubhra Shetty, reflecting on marriage, their age difference and the emotional importance of the life they have built together.
In a recent conversation with Janice Sequeira, the filmmaker and Shubhra discussed their relationship and whether marriage could be part of their future.
For Kashyap, the legal or social label attached to a relationship appears less important than continuing to share a life with the person he loves.
Anurag Kashyap says marriage is not the priority
Kashyap revealed that Shubhra does not believe in marriage, while he is more concerned with preserving their relationship than formalising it.
“I’m very happy to be with her. I want to be with her. So, whatever that takes,” he said during the conversation.
The filmmaker also spoke about growing older and the desire to remain healthy enough to spend more time with the people he loves.
He explained that he does not want to lose the relationship they have built and is comfortable with whatever form their future takes.
“As long as we have found what we have found now, I’m happy with anything. I don’t want to lose this,” Kashyap said.
His comments suggest that, for the filmmaker, companionship has become more significant than conventional ideas about marriage.
Shubhra Shetty recalls an emotional moment from their early relationship
Shubhra also reflected on the early stages of their relationship.
She recalled a conversation from when the couple was deeply in love and still experiencing what she described as their honeymoon phase.
According to Shubhra, she once told Kashyap that falling in love had been something she wanted to experience during her lifetime. After experiencing it, she jokingly suggested that she could die happy.
The remark reportedly affected Kashyap deeply.
Shubhra said the filmmaker became emotional and told her that, before meeting her, he had never been particularly afraid of death. Their relationship, she recalled, had given him something he wanted to live for.
The memory offered an intimate glimpse into how seriously the couple viewed their bond during the early years of their relationship.
Anurag Kashyap talks about their age difference
The couple has also faced public attention because of their age gap.
Kashyap acknowledged that he has become increasingly conscious of the difference as he has grown older.
“We’ve had our moments. We have been self-conscious. I’ve been more conscious,” he said.
The filmmaker explained that there was a period when he tried particularly hard not to think about the age difference.
“There was a point because her face doesn’t show her age. She still looks the same. She doesn’t look her age. So the thing is, the more I grew older and she kept looking the same, that’s when I became slightly conscious,” he added.
Rather than describing the age difference as something that has defined their relationship, Kashyap’s comments indicate that his own perception of getting older has sometimes made him more aware of it.
How Anurag Kashyap and Shubhra Shetty’s relationship began
Shubhra previously worked as an assistant director at Kashyap’s production company, Phantom Films.
The two were first photographed together publicly in 2015, and reports about their relationship continued to attract attention in the years that followed. They were reportedly open about their relationship by 2018.
Their relationship has continued for several years despite the scrutiny surrounding their age difference and Kashyap’s previous marriages.
Anurag Kashyap’s previous marriages
Before his relationship with Shubhra, Kashyap was married to editor Aarti Bajaj. The former couple have a daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap.
Kashyap later married actor Kalki Koechlin in 2011. Their marriage ended in separation, and the couple subsequently divorced.
His current relationship with Shubhra has therefore marked another significant chapter in his personal life.
For Kashyap, however, the latest conversation appears to be less about marriage or labels and more about holding on to a relationship he considers deeply meaningful.
